"Maundy" comes from the Latin 'mandatum' - 'commandment' (think 'mandate' as a derivative). On this day Jesus gives us his 'new commandment' concerning Love for oneanother as he has loved us. This takes place at the Last Supper-Lord's Supper after the foot-washing. So on this day in Holy Week, the day of the New Commandment and Institution of the New Covenant, the Church celebrates the Eucharist is renewed by the all-embracing love of Christ, submitting afresh to his commandment to love as he loved and loves.
